Our Curriculum
At HCFS, it is our aim to inspire, enrich and nurture so each individual, regardless of background, ethnicity or level of need, reaches their full potential.
When children join our school, they embark on a journey that initiates a passion for life-long learning. This journey enables them to be happy, inquisitive learners, who are engaged and stimulated through our carefully designed curriculum. We create our own planning to deliver our English and Maths curriculum as we believe this is the best way to personalise learning to suit the needs of our children. Both the Maths and English curriculum are supported by fluency sessions. Within these sessions, children are given the opportunity to retrieve previously learnt concepts, at speed, to support with cementing this learning within the long term memory. The Reading journey begins in Early years with Little Wandle Letters and Sounds and progresses on to whole class reading comprehension in key stage two.
Our whole curriculum is vocabulary rich, with language and communication at the core. Our Project learning combines Art, DT, History and Geography, all of which are based around their own set of ‘golden threads’. We use ‘hook’ lessons to enrich new learning to allow children to fully immerse in the topic. This could be through a trip, having a visitor/workshop come to the school or an in school activity. Our curriculum is sequential, progressive and relevant to our community. It activates and secures prior learning, builds on skills and deepens knowledge and understanding over and across subjects so that pupils’ learning stays with them. To that end, we provide children with a curriculum that is diverse and represents the world in which they live.
Great teaching and adaptive classroom practice is enhanced by bespoke interventions that are driven by Pupil Progress Meetings and inclusion reviews.
In summary, our curriculum:
- Is inclusive and accessible while having high expectations of all
- Inspires, engages and fosters curiosity
- Is broad and balanced; adhering to the National Curriculum and Early Years Framework
- Promotes respect and diversity, including British values
- Provides a variety of learning opportunities
