It has been a wonderful week here in year six!
In English, we have been learning to use different features such as conjunctive adverbials, cohesive devices and emotive vocabulary - as well as discussing our opinions on if animals should go into space or not. Next week, we are going to be writing a discussion piece based on this.
In Maths, we have been focusing on area and perimeter. We used our knowledge of our times tables to figure out the area and we even tried to challenge ourselves by finding the missing length of some shapes. Next week, we are going to be learning about multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.
This week in Project - Child’s War, we have been studying World War II - mostly focusing on women and what jobs they had to do. We designed a propaganda poster to persuade women to join different jobs which men would normally complete at the time. We then used our learning about WW2 shelters to create our own.
In Science,we have been learning about mythical creatures, grouping methods and categorising animals - which falls into the category of biology. Next week, we will be creating a tally and graphs about the different invertebrates that we can find on our school grounds.
We all hope that you have a lovely weekend!

This week school has been amazing! We have worked hard and we all wish it would never end.
In English, we have been writing descriptive paragraphs about body language and micro-expressions. The vocabulary we have been learning has improved our writing immensely, including the acronyms our teachers have been teaching us to help us learn the different techniques we need to produce an outstanding piece of writing.
In Maths, we have been dividing four digit numbers by two digit numbers using long division. Even though we have not touched upon this concept in a while, it is incredible that most of us still have a deep understanding of the topic. It has also been quite interesting, as our brilliant teachers have found numerous ways to keep it interesting.
This week in Project we have been focusing on World War 2, especially on the Blitz- a period in time when London and many other major cities were bombed every night for eight months! We designed a beautiful but emotional piece of artwork that represented the air raids- when the Germans dropped bombs down from the sky- and the lights that would save lives by reflecting on the planes.
For Music, we played the ukulele and our teachers taught us how to play the C and F chord and how to hold the ukulele. At first, it was quite tricky but later we managed to strum the strings in unison and we mastered it!
We hope you enjoyed reading about what we did this week in school!

This week was spectacular for us. We learnt many new things from topics ranging from Science, English and Spanish!
In our Project topic, we learned all about how World War 2 commenced and all of the important dates involving it. We also created some breathtaking pictures resembling The Blitz, the period of time when Germany started bombing Great Britain every night for 7 months.
Within our Science topic, Classification, we learnt about mammals and how scientists classify animals into different groups. In addition to that, we produced some posters about a mammal of our choice.
In English, we wrote descriptive paragraphs about a video called ‘Alma’, a fictional video about how an ordinary girl transformed into a doll. On top of that, we mastered an acronym called SHAMPOO to enhance our writing as much as possible.
In Maths, we learnt all about graphs, tables, and how you conduct data. We went across the class conducting our lives varying from how much pocket money you get per week
to how much computer games you play every day on average.
In Spanish, we studied words relating to our project topic (World War 2). Some of these words that we learnt about included los hombres lucharon en la guerra (meaning men fought in war) and segunda guerra mundial (meaning World War 2).
In PSHE, we learned about positive thinking and negative thoughts and how we should react when we are put in a negative situation. We made paper chains about negative thoughts
which occurred in our lives before and how we reacted to them.
All in all, Year 6 had a sensational week and there is just more to come.

This week in year 6 was so much fun! We have learnt lots of new things!
This week in English we have started a new topic shifting away from no ballet shoes in Syria and focusing on our new topic of 'The Shadow of Blue’. For our first piece we started to write a narrative describing her disabilities and her thoughts. Everyone was interested and engaged with the piece and we enjoyed exploring the use of exciting vocabulary. After half term, we will be starting our new topic 'Alma'.
In Maths, we have been learning about ratio and proportion where we have been enjoying using our new methods of calculating and simplifying them. We have also been switching back to our original marking system which has helped the pupils. We had to use our prior knowledge of fractions and simplifying to help us when answering questions on this topic. We will be learning about statistics after half term.
In project, we have continued to be artists - designing even more drawings in the style of Dan Fenelon. We have explored the use of Mayan art techniques and have been able to represent our birth date in the style of Mayan symbols. Towards the end of the week, we applied our learning from this half term to help us create a final art piece. We are excited to find out what our next project will be!
In Science this week, we concluded our Space topic by looking at seasons. We explored what effects seasonality and compared the UK to Australia. We applied our understanding of line graphs when plotting the temperatures of the two countries.
We hope that you all have a lovely half term!

It's been a great week in Year 6! We have began the making stage in our DT lessons and we are thoroughly enjoying seeing the children’s creativity shine through when making their story sacks. We have been blown away by the children’s motivation for their learning and couldn’t be more proud of the students who have continued to work on aspects at home – what superstars!
In our mathematical learning, we have been learning about fractions. We began the week by converting and comparing fractions, we then moved onto ordering fractions and finally, adding and subtracting fractions. This can be a very challenging concept, but the children have impressed us with their determination and resilience. A secure understanding of our times tables has also been invaluable this week. Remember that TTRS is a brilliant resource if you don't feel that your recall of multiplication facts is where it needs to be. Next week, we will be learning about position and direction.
In our English lessons this week we have continued our learning surrounding the modern fiction novel, Wonder. The children have been hooked to this book and have developed a creative flair with their writing. This week we focussed on rhetorical questions, similes and metaphors and the children applied these skills when writing an emotive speech. Next week, we will be testing our acting skills, whilst also beginning to explore poetry.
In Science this week, we took experiments to a whole new level. We explored reversible and irreversible changes when mixing bicarbonate of soda with vinegar to produce CO2. We also made our own ‘plastic’ by mixing white vinegar with milk – yuk! Finally, the highlight of the lesson was when we produced an explosion by mixing coke and mentos!
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
Friday 4th October 2024
It's been a strange week in Year 6 following Miss Matuszczyk's departure, but we thank her for the support she has offered over the first month of Year 6. Miss Pape is looking forward to joining us in Year 6 and settling into the new routine of teaching alongside Mrs Cooper, Ms Hammond and Ms Delaney.
In our learning, it's been a busy week and we've come on leaps and bounds.
In our mathematical learning, we have been learning about the formal written method of multiplication. Being secure with our multiplication tables has been invaluable for this method in achieving an accurate answer. We then applied the methods to word problems later on in the week. Remember that TTRS is a brilliant resource if you don't feel that your recall of multiplication facts is where it needs to be.
In our English lessons this week we have begun our learning surrounding the modern fiction novel, Wonder. The children have been reading the book in class since September, so there has definitely been a buzz around the classrooms as we've started learning about it in greater detail. The children were able to develop their dictionary and thesaurus skills this week and building up a bank of vocabulary to describe characters in the story. This learning will set them in good stead for next week when we start to write descriptive passages about characters.
In our Project lessons, the children have begun the DT element and boy have they been excited! We've read the story Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers and we've started the process of designing a story sack with educational contents. We're hoping that we get to make the story sack and that our reception children will be able to enjoy them once completed.
Have a great weekend, hope it's a relaxing one!
Friday 27th September
This week’s weather has definitely contributed well to our arctic animal non chronological reports! We wrote paragraphs explaining an animal’s diet, habitat and appearance, using facts we researched last week. Each day we wrote a different paragraph, focusing on conjunctions and interesting sentence starters. David Attenborough, eat your heart out!
In mathematics we had fun learning about shape, with practical lessons, exploring 3D shapes and their nets. Next week we will move onto multiplication, revisiting formal written methods. Our times table knowledge will be put to the test.
In RE we discussed the differences and similarities between the 10 commandments and the Eightfold path. We spoke about how they are both a set of rules that different faiths live by and how both faiths aspire to behave respectfully towards their peers.
We also got creative this week and designed Christmas cards, which will be available to buy soon. It seems far too early to be talking about Christmas, however the weather has made us feel that it will be upon us quickly.
A huge congratulations to our newly appointed senior pupil leaders and another huge well done to everyone who applied and worked extremely hard on your application; your effort did not go unnoticed.
School photos are on Monday, so please make sure you are wearing the correct uniform (it should be everyday) and please continue to have your PE kits in school every Monday and Wednesday.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 6 Team
Friday 20th September 2024
With our baseline assessments behind us, we have appreciated the glorious sunshine as we’ve started our learning journey.
In English this week, we have continued exploring non-chronological reports and their features. From personal and impersonal language, coordinating and subordinating conjunctions and assessing layouts, we were able to put our new learning into practise by planning our own report on the topic of Arctic animals. Did you know that polar bears can run up to 25 miles an hour?
In mathematics, we have recapped our prior learning on how to add and subtract mentally, discussing different techniques to use. We then moved on to calculating multi step problems, where we needed to understand what the problem was asking us to do, and chose which technique would lead us to the answer most effectively.
The sunshine has allowed us to thrive in our outdoor PE sessions, where we focused on blocking and marking in Netball and we also took our PSE lesson outside to role play about disagreements.
Our PSE this term is looking at how we treat our VIPs and what could or should happen if there is a disagreement. We have also discussed how to share our opinions respectfully and how to compromise.
As a cohort we are still learning about respect and how to show it to adults and our peers.
Next week we are moving away from addition and subtraction and moving on to properties of shapes in Mathematics. In English we will continue writing our non-chronological reports and hope to be masters of the Arctic.
Friday 13th September
Dear Parents & Carers,
It has been a busy week in year 6. The children have had their first taste of the SATs assessments with our baselines. They were all incredibly supportive of each other when looking through the papers and revising questions - thank you for showing great teamwork year 6.
In English this week, we begun our first topic and spent time exploring a range of reports. The children were able to unpick features and identify a range of technical vocabulary. They were able to use their understanidn from provious topics to compare the difference between chronological and non-chronological reports. We spent today learning about active and passive voice - we look forward to seeing this applied into their writing. Next week, we will be delving deeper into the features of reports and seeing what additional SPaG concepts we can apply to our writing.
In Mathematics next week we are going to be revisiting our understanding of addition and subtraction. We will be looking at ways we can add and subtract mentally and towards the end of the week, we will apply these to help us answer reasoning problems.
Our project this half term is 'Frozen Kingdom'. We have started the term by focusing on the Geography aspects. This week, we explored the different polar regions and were able to draw a detailed map, which included information on the climate and animals that live there. Next week, we are going to be looking at longitude, latitude and time zones.
We have spoken to the children alot this week about respect and the importance of following the school rules. We were really pleased to see that they have reflected on our discussions and we look forward to seeing this continue as the year progresses.
We hope you have a lovely weekend!

Friday 6th September
Dear Parents & Carers,
It has been a lovely 1st week back to the new academic year! The children have settled in well to year 6 and have approached each new change with maturity.
In English this week, the children have completed a range of activities which have allowed us to explore their writing. We have worked together to complete a biography and a piece of descriptive writing about a mystery picture. We have been blown away by the children’s creativity and use of vocabulary. We are really excited to see the work that they produce this year. Next week, we are exploring newspaper reports.
In Mathematics, we have been revisiting our understanding of place value. We have been reading, writing, ordering and comparing number up to the value of 1 million. Today, we were learning how to round numbers up to 1 000 000.
Next week, the children will be completing their year 6 baselines. We have told them that there is absolutely nothing to worry about. This week is just providing us adults with further information about how we can support the children with where they need to get to.
We spoke to the children about SATs today and what to expect. We introduced them to the following website, where they can complete quizzes from past SATs papers:
The senior pupil leader applications are now open and must be submitted by Friday 13th September. We will be taking on 10 senior pupil leaders this year (including a head boy and head girl).
We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
