Reading at HCFS
Every week the children are taught highly structured reading comprehension lessons from Year 1 – 6 and guided reading lessons in Reception. These lessons focus on the required reading skills that children need to comprehend a text effectively. Lessons are tailored to support all needs through appropriate differentiated texts and questions that allows children to read and comprehend at their own level of understanding. We use a variety of genres to expose the children a variety of writing. Once a term the children assessed in reading with standardised tests which allows us to identify specific skills that need developing. Children read to an adult bi weekly using the oxford reading tree levelled books. Children are identified as working towards will be read with more frequently to accelerate their progress. Children also have the opportunity to take home a book to read for please alongside their levelled reading book. Children have a chance to become reading buddies.
What reading looks like at HCFS?
At HCFS we intend to..
- Provide a high quality English Curriculum that is relevant and engaging to all children;
- Provide children with the skills to decode words in order to read fluently;
- Equip children with the core foundations of reading to go on to research any areas they wish;
- Ensure all children are confident readers, who can apply the skills learnt independently in a variety of situations;
- Provide engaging and relevant reading materials and opportunities for reading that enable pupils to develop a lifelong love of reading;
- Use reading to provoke thought within children – developing inquisitive readers who seek to ask questions about what they are reading;
- Use parents as partners in their children’s reading journey;
- Motivate children to obtain new knowledge through reading;
- Ensure children understand how valuable their reading skills will be in the real world, and the opportunities this can provide for them.
