Spring 1, Week 6

Thank you to those that joined us on Thursday for the drop-in ‘Open Classroom’ session. It was lovely to be able to celebrate your childrens fantastic work with you!
Learning:
The children have now learnt all of the Phase 2 and Phase 3 phonemes and graphemes for this school year. Over the next few months we will be developing our reading and writing ability when using these sounds, and practising tricky words.
This week the children have been revising their learning from Spring 1 and have each completed a Phonics Assessment.

In Literacy this week, we have continued our topic of ‘Supertato’. The children have been using their imagination to design and describe their own superhero or villain! We have seen some brilliant pieces of work.
In Maths this week, we have continued our topic of ‘patterns’. The children have been using actions to create AAB and AABB patterns, for example – stomp, stomp, clap, clap.
In Project this week the children have been learning about World Kindness Day. We have explored how it makes us feel when friends are kind to us. The children created a ‘Kindness Jar’ in class.
In our child-initiated-learning (CIL) time the children have been printing and painting valentines cards in Rabbits class, designing vegetable characters in Hedgehogs and matching numbers to their numicon pieces in Badgers.

Spring 1, Week 5

Learning:
The children have now learnt all of the Phase 2 and Phase 3 phonemes and graphemes for this school year. Over the next few months we will be developing our reading and writing ability when using these sounds, and practising tricky words.
This week the focus has been – longer words. The children have practised words such as ‘sunset’ and learnt to ‘chunk’ the word when segmenting it to make it easier to read, for example, s-u-n/s-e-t.

In Literacy this week, we have continued our topic of ‘Supertato’. The children have been creating their own ‘Wanted’ posters for the character ‘evil pea’, and using descriptive words.
In Maths this week, we have begun our new topic of ‘patterns’. The children started the week with a focus on AB patterns such as, red-blue-red-blue, but have developed their knowledge to trickier patterns such as ABC and AAB patterns:

In Project this week the children have been reading the story ‘Oliver’s Fruit Salad’. We have learnt about how to stay healthy and how important it is to keep our bodies safe. The children each made their own fruit salad faces – please do check Tapestry for the photos! J
In our child-initiated-learning (CIL) time the children have been rescuing superheroes in Hedgehogs class, singing as part of a group in Rabbits class, and exploring and describing different scents in Badgers class.
We had a lovely day on Thursday celebrating Maths Day! The children looked amazing in their rock-star costumes and we completed some great maths activities across the day. Well done everybody!

In Literacy this week, we started to learn the new topic of ‘Supertato’. The children have been using descriptive words such as ‘strong’ and ‘brave’ to describe the character.
In Maths this week, we have focussed on subtraction. The children have been learning how to subtract numbers within 10 and turned these into number sentences. For example – ‘8-3=5’
In Project this week the children have been learning about how things grow. We each had the opportunity to plant a basil seed and will observe its growth over the next few weeks.
The children sequenced the events of the plant life-cycle too.
In our child-initiated-learning (CIL) time, we have been continuing our subtracting skills in Rabbits class. In Hedgehogs the children have been moulding playdough into different vegetable shapes. In Badgers we were making observations of plants and also writing sentences about Supertato characters.

In Literacy this week, we finalised our learning on the story ‘Owl Babies’ by writing non-fiction fact-files. The children have learnt some interesting facts about owls and written these as labels and sentences.
In Maths this week, we have continued our learning on addition, using cube towers to create a number sentence. The children have successfully used part-part-whole models and written their own sums to 10.
In Project this week the children have been learning about the emergency services that are available to us. We now know that 999 is the number to call in an emergency and we have also been practising our addresses.
In our child-initiated-learning (CIL) time, we have been using scissors to cut specific shapes in Rabbits, making owl nests from playdough in Hedgehogs, and practising the role of health care professionals in Badgers class in the new role-play area!

In Literacy this week, we continued to read the story ‘Owl Babies’. The children have created their own story maps and retold this together.
In Maths this week, we have been creating addition sentences using part-whole models. The children have revised addition sums to 10.
In Project this week the children have been learning about Florence Nightingale and how she was a ‘superhero’. The children have discussed the meaning of ‘past’ and ‘present’ and have sorted new and old objects into these definitions.

In Maths this week, we have been counting to 20 and back again. The children were able to create teens numbers on tens frames and practised writing them too.
