Personal, Social, Health and Economics Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Health Education (RHE) at HCFS
At Hatfield Community Free School, our PSHE and Citizenship scheme includes Relationship and Health Education. Our curriculum equips pupils with the essential knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive. Through carefully planned and well‑resourced lessons, we support children to develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of personal and social responsibility. Our curriculum is rooted in recognising everyone’s value, celebrating individuality and promoting British Values.
Working with Twinkl, we have developed a comprehensive Scheme of Work that covers the key themes required within the updated statutory guidance from September 2026: Personal Safety, Online Safety, Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. These units ensure pupils learn how to protect and enhance their wellbeing while understanding their role as active, positive citizens.
Our RHE curriculum is further enriched by our annual 'Speak Up and Stay Safe' workshops delivered by the NSPCC, strengthening pupils’ understanding of personal safety and empowering them to seek help when needed.

Do we teach sex education at HCFS?
At HCFS, sex education is not part of our primary curriculum. From September 2026, we will not teach sexual intercourse or human conception within PSHE and RHE lessons as it is not statutory. However, pupils do receive teaching on puberty, which is statutory within Relationships and Health Education (RHE). As content on puberty is required by law, parents cannot withdraw their child from these lessons.
Please note, it is also statutory for pupils to learn about reproduction as part of the science curriculum. This forms part of the National Curriculum for Science, and therefore pupils cannot be withdrawn from these lessons.
NSPCC Enrichment
Every year, Year 2 and Year 6 will have access to the NSPCC "Speak Out, Stay Safe" resources during our PSHE lessons. The resources help children to identify personal safety concerns and to seek help if needed. The videos will be seen by the children to enrich their learning.

In September 2026, statutory changes to the PSHE and RHE curriculum come into effect. The following document outlines the changes and shows where these changes occur in in KS1 and KS2 lessons. During the course of the year, parents will be invited from Year 4 and Year 6 to visit the school and speak with our Assistant Vice Principal (Curriculum) about lesson content. Further information about upcoming meetings will be shared closer to the time.
