At Hatfield Community Free School, our aim is to inspire, enrich, and nurture every individual so that all pupils—regardless of background, ethnicity, or level of need—are empowered to reach their full potential.
When children join our school, they begin a learning journey that sparks a passion for life-long learning. We strive to develop happy, inquisitive learners who are engaged and stimulated through our carefully designed curriculum. All planning is thoughtfully adapted to meet the needs of our children, ensuring clear progression for every pupil. Both the Maths and English curricula are strengthened by fluency sessions, where children revisit previously taught concepts at speed to secure them in their long-term memory.
Throughout the curriculum, children are provided with consistent and meaningful opportunities to listen to adults read, enabling them to experience and internalise models of fluent reading. A child’s reading journey begins in Early Years with Little Wandle Letters and Sounds, progressing to whole-class reading comprehension in Key Stage 2. Our curriculum is rich in vocabulary, with language and communication at its heart.
Our unique project-based, cross-curricular approach combines subjects such as History or Geography with Art & Design or Design Technology to create rich and meaningful learning experiences. Each project is driven by a broad key concept question that children work towards answering by the end of each half-term. This ensures learning is coherent, connected and purposeful, enabling pupils to articulate their understanding confidently. Designed by our own senior staff, these projects are inclusive, engaging and tailored to the needs of our children. They culminate in exciting end-point outcomes that draw on a wide range of skills.
Enrichment opportunities are embedded throughout the curriculum, whether through educational visits, workshops, visiting experts or in-school experiences. Our curriculum is sequential, progressive and relevant, with strong opportunities for community engagement. It builds upon prior learning, deepens skills and strengthens knowledge across subjects so that learning is retained and meaningful. We are committed to providing a diverse curriculum that reflects the world our children live in, with a strong emphasis on equality, including dedicated learning during Black History Month.
High-quality teaching and adaptive classroom practice are further supported by bespoke interventions, informed by Pupil Progress Meetings and inclusion reviews.
