At Hatfield Community Free School, we believe design technology is a powerful vehicle for nurturing creativity, critical thinking and purposeful problem-solving. Our intent is to equip pupils with the confidence to explore ideas, take risks, and respond to real-world challenges with imagination and resilience. By engaging in hands-on projects rooted in meaningful contexts, children learn to design for a purpose, make with care and evaluate with curiosity. We aim to develop learners who can think like designers: identifying needs, generating ideas, refining prototypes, and reflecting on impact. Through this, pupils gain not only technical knowledge but also a sense of agency—the belief that they can shape the world around them through thoughtful design. Our "Golden Threads" are skills that are revisited in every design technology project ensuring pupils learning is consolidated as they go through our school.

If you have any further questions about what your child is specifically learning in design technology, please visit our Project curriculum page and read our curriculum newsletters.
