Religious Education

R.E. at HCFS

At Hatfield Community Free School, the RE curriculum is broad, rich and inclusive, giving children meaningful opportunities to learn about a wide range of religions, worldviews and themes linked to personal development and wellbeing. It is coherent and progressive, with strong connections to SMSC development, community cohesion and cross‑curricular learning.

The aims of RE in our school are to:

  • develop pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other principal religions and worldviews.
  • encourage pupils to explore questions of meaning, purpose, and value.
  • foster an appreciation of how religious beliefs shape life and behaviour.
  • support pupils in developing their own ideas, values, and identities.
  • promote respect for different cultures and beliefs, preparing children for life modern Britain and guided by British values.

Right to Withdraw from Religious Education
At Hatfield Community Free School, Religious Education (RE) is taught as part of a broad and balanced curriculum that helps pupils understand a range of beliefs, values and worldviews.

In line with Section 71(3) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, parents have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of RE. If you are considering withdrawal, we ask that you contact the Assistant Vice Principal to discuss the curriculum and any questions you may have.

Any formal request for withdrawal must be made in writing to the Headteacher. Pupils who are withdrawn from RE will be supervised during this time, but alternative curriculum teaching will not be provided.

For more information about what your child is learning, please speak with their Class Teacher.
