Autumn 1 - Week 2

Friday 19th September 2025

What a wonderful week of learning we have had in Year 3!

In English, we continued reading The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. The children have amazed us with their thoughtful writing, working hard on correctly punctuated sentences and even creating diary entries from the perspective of Plop, the baby barn owl. Their creativity and imagination have truly shone through – we are so proud of the incredible pieces they produced!

In Maths, our focus has been on addition and subtraction with 2- and 3-digit numbers. The children practised using number lines and partitioning, and some even challenged themselves with the column method. It has been fantastic to see their confidence grow and to watch them take risks with their learning.

During Project, we investigated where our vegetables come from. The children explored why some vegetables can be grown in the UK, while others are better suited to places like Spain. They asked brilliant questions and showed great curiosity about the food we eat every day.

In Science, we examined different types of rocks. The children carried out hands-on experiments to test and identify which rocks they had. Their enthusiasm for scientific discovery was clear to see!

Finally, in Spanish, we practised greetings and enjoyed trying out new vocabulary together. We are already looking forward to celebrating Spanish Day next Friday!

Thank you for your continued support – we wish you all a wonderful weekend.

Autumn 1 Week 1: A Fantastic Start to the Year!

Friday 12th September 2025

What a wonderful first full week back we’ve had in Year 3! The children have settled into their new classrooms beautifully and have shown lots of enthusiasm and curiosity in all of their lessons – it’s been a joy to see!

In English, we’ve started reading our new class book 'The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark' by Jil Tomlinson. The children are already enjoying the story and have begun to describe the main character, Plop the owl, using a variety of sentences.

In Maths, we’ve been diving into place value. The children have been using base 10 to help them understand how to partition numbers. They’ve been representing numbers in different ways and have worked hard to explain their thinking clearly.

In Science, we began our new topic all about rocks. The children had lots of fun feeling and examining different types of rocks before choosing one to draw carefully in their books. We talked about texture, colour, and patterns – they were excellent rock detectives!

Our Project work has taken us on a journey around the world to explore allotments. We’ve been learning about how people grow their own food and the importance of soil. The children had a go at guessing different types of soil just by feeling them – there was lots of discussion and great scientific thinking!

It’s been a busy, exciting, and successful first week, and we’re so proud of how well everyone has settled in. We can’t wait to see what next week brings!

Have a lovely weekend!
