Summer 1 Week 2
Notices:
If your child is part of the TUESDAY MULTI-SPORTS club, please ensure they come to school with spare sports clothes that day as opposed to using their PE kit. Thank you.
Learning:
This week, we have been assessing the children’s phonic knowledge so far, in preparation for Year 1.
We are very proud of the progress they are each making!
For the remainder of the school year, the children will be revisiting and reviewing Phase 2 and 3 Phonics to ensure that they are secure for Year 1. It is important that you are reading with your child multiple times per week to support this.

In Literacy this week, the children have re-read the story, ‘Elmer’ and begun to create their own books all about them.
These consist of self-portraits and facts about their lives.
In Maths, we have been completing assessment work with the children to monitor their progress so far.
In Project, the children have started their new topic of ‘Creations’.
This week, the children have been learning about various artists such as Jackson Pollock and Rachel Maiden. We have been creating artwork in different styles such as ‘flicking’, ‘pouring’, and ‘marbling’.

Notices:
It has been lovely welcoming the children back after the Easter break. We cannot believe that we are in the final term of the year already! Thank you to those that posted photos onto Tapestry of what your children did during the holidays, it has been lovely to catch up with them and share experiences with friends.
If you have not already, please remember to bring your child’s PE back into school, ensuring they have a white PE top and black PE shorts. Earrings must not be worn on PE days (Friday), and any body-jewellery must be taped down please.

In Literacy this week, the children have read the story, ‘Elmer’. The children have been thinking about what makes them special and then writing this as a sentence.
In Maths, the children have been learning their number bonds to 5 and to 10. The children have been able to write these as number sentences, as well as put them into part-whole models.
In Project, the children have started their new topic of ‘Creations’.
This week, the children have been learning about primary and secondary colours. We have been mixing lots of paints to see what colours we can create and then make artwork with this.

In Literacy this week, the children have read the story, ‘We’re Going on an Egg Hunt’. The children have been drawing key events from the story and sequencing it.
In Maths, the children have been learning to count and subitise. The children are now able to look at a small amount of objects and subitise this as opposed to counting it first. We have also been thinking about guessing and estimation.
In Project, the children are continuing their topic of ‘We’re Going on a Journey’.
This week the children have been on adventures to different locations around the world!
On Monday, they created their own passports for ready for their visits to AFRICA, ANTARCTICA and the RAINFOREST.

Spring 2 Week 3
Notices:
Please ensure your child has a waterproof coat for the coming weeks. It is forecasted to be very wet. Children have access to our outdoor area regardless of the weather.
Children’s PE kit for this term is WHITE TOP and SHORTS.
Please ensure your child has this in their HCFS PE bag.
Please also ensure that your child has no jewellery on for PE (Friday). Any religious or body jewellery will need to be taped down as per our school policy.

In Literacy the children have been listening to the story ‘Train Ride’. This is the core text that we are continuing to read for the next two weeks.
The children also explored the story ‘The Little Boat’ this week. They were thinking about what they could see and hear whilst on the boat.
In Maths, the children have been learning about the composition and decomposition of shapes. We have also been creating patterns using shapes.
In Project, the children are continuing their topic of ‘We’re Going on a Journey’.
This week the children have been learning about travelling by foot. They have enjoyed a nature walk and making nature bracelets. We have also begun to think about our 5 senses, as well as the differences we can see in nature within each season.

A polite request if any parents/carers have any children’s spare or unwanted clothing items aged between 3-6 years, like socks, t-shirts ,underwear, jackets, wellies, tights, trousers please can they be donated to the EYFS. It is very helpful for when children need a change of clothes from messy/wet play.

In Literacy the children have been listening to the story ‘Train Ride’. This is the core text that we are continuing to read for the next two weeks. The children have been sequencing the story this week. They understand that ‘sequence’ means to put it in the right order.
In Maths, the children have been learning about number bonds to ten.
They are mostly able to create number sentences showing this now. For example; 1+9=10 / 2+8=10 / 3+7=10.
In Project, the children are continuing their topic of ‘We’re Going on a Journey’.
This week the children have been learning about air and water transport. They understand that transport is a means of getting somewhere. The children made boats in groups and tested them to see if they could float and withstand the water.

Welcome back after our half-term break!
It has been lovely to see all the children again after our week off.

In Literacy the children have been listening to the story ‘Train Ride’. This is a new core text that we are reading for the next three weeks. The children have been writing simple sentences this week stating what could be seen from the train window, i.e. I can see cows.
In Maths, the children have been learning all about making 9 and 10 using a tens frame. The children are becoming increasingly confident with knowing that an empty tens frame means 0 and one that is full shows us a total of 10. In the week, the children were able to create number sentences that totalled to 9 and 10, such as: 5+4=9 and 7+3=10.
In Project, the children have started their new topic of ‘We’re Going on a Journey’.
This week the children have been learning about Space. They have enjoyed naming the planets, comparing sizes and appearances of them. The children also designed their own alien and wrote a postcard to a friend in space!

In Literacy the children have been listening to the story ‘Supertato’. There has been an urgent message from the school kitchen that when they cooks arrived, the freezer door was left open and there was an empty packet of peas on the floor. The children created WANTED posters by writing simple captions to find the evil peas!
In Maths, the children have been learning all about measuring length and height. We have been listening to the story ‘Titch’ and discussing size vocabulary like titich, tiny, big, tall, biggest and smallest. The children ordered different size pictures from smallest to biggest. Then we used cubes to measure how long the different sized pictures were. We wrote down the correct numerals under each picture.
In Project, the children have been learning about a past superhero called ‘St George’. St George was a very brave hero because he defeated a dragon. We discussed St George day and any other special events the children may celebrate. We spoke about the word brave and what it means. The children drew 4 things that makes them feel brave and put it onto a shield.

Spring 1 Week 5
This week in Phonics the children have been learning to read longer words by breaking the word up to make it easier to read. We have been reading words like ‘chicken/pocket/rocket/sunset/picnic.’ The children have then been putting these words into short phrases.

In Literacy the children have been introduced to a new story ‘Supertato’ we have been discussing WHO/WHERE and WHAT happened in the story. The children discussed the problem and solution in the story (evil vs good). We used words to describe superheroes and discussed their special qualities/powers. The children then wrote their ideas down using their phonics learning.
In Maths, the children have been learning all about doubling amounts. We looked at the words match, pair, double and same. The children counted spots on a ladybird and matched it by making double. We then wrote a number sentence to show our working out for example 3 + 3=6.
In Project, the children have been learning about ‘Healthy living’ and ways in which we can keep healthy. We did exercise videos, spoke about healthy teeth, less screen time, drinking water and explored different fruit and vegetables. The children made their own fruit face using different types of fruit and then we all had a taste of some yummy fruits too.
Thank you to all the parents who have offered to come in for a parent talk with the children to discuss their job role. The children and staff are very appreciative of this.

Spring 1 Week 4
This week in Phonics the children continued learning Phase 3 sounds. We learnt two new phonemes (sounds) ‘air’ and ‘er’. The children also learnt double consonant sounds for example double ‘bb’, ‘gg’, ‘rr’ and put them into words.

In Literacy the children have been looking at non-fiction reports. We discussed what does non-fiction mean? The children learnt new facts all about Owls. We read sentences together all about Owls. The children then went on to create their own non-fiction report all about Owls.
In Maths, the children have been exploring the composition of numbers 6, 7 and 8. We have been looking at different ways to make 6, 7 and 8. The children then went on to make number sentences by counting ladybird spots and seeing how many spots there are altogether.
In Project, the children have been learning about ‘The World around us’. The children have been thinking about how we can care and look after our environment. We also discussed recycling and how it helps our planet. The children looked at the lifecycle of a plant, sequenced the life cycle in groups and then planted their own seed to take home. It would be lovely to see how your plant grows at home! Please share photos on Tapestry if possible.

In Literacy, we have been reading the story ‘The Owl Babies’
The children reviewed the story. We made our own story map as a class this week. The children made their own actions to re-tell the story using no words just pictures. We spoke about how the different characters feel in the story and what was the problem in the story and solution.
This week we re-told the story using the story map we made last week. The children made their own story map of the Owl Babies story and re-told the story. The children re-telling the story has been recorded and put onto Tapestry.
In Maths, the children have been exploring capacity. Capacity is how much a container can hold. The children explored the capacity of different containers and went on to identify whether a container was empty, half full or full. The children predicted how many spoonful’s of liquid a container held. Then went on to explore the accuracy of their predictions by checking their answer. We also explored the different amount of water in a bottle compared to a cup and how a tall bottle may hold less than a wide jug and trying to justify why or how.
In Project, the children have been learning about ‘Superheroes’ and People who help us. This week the children have been learning all about emergency services and how they help. We have been looking in particular firefighters and how they help us. The children explored the different equipment different emergency services use and discussed in groups what they are. The children identified the number to call if there is an emergency. We spoke about fire drills and why we practice these in school sometimes. We role-played fire drills and spoke about our rules of being ready, respectful and safe.

In Literacy, we have been reading the story ‘The Owl Babies’
The children reviewed the story. We made our own story map as a class this week. The children made their own actions to re-tell the story using no words just pictures. We spoke about how the different characters feel in the story and what was the problem in the story and solution.
In Maths, the children have been learning all about mass and capacity. We have been exploring weighing scales and measured how light and heavy different objects are. The children used words like weight, scales, lighter, heavier, balanced, same and equal. We then went onto trying to find two objects that measure the same. As a challenge we weighed an object and counted how many cubes were needed to measure the same as that object and to make the scales balanced.
In Project, the children have been learning about ‘Superheroes’ and People who help us. We learnt all about the life of Florence Nightingale. The children looked at hospitals in the past and present and the different items you would use now and then. The children also made lamps, explored the doctor surgery role play and made nurse bags.

In Literacy, we have been reading the story ‘The Owl Babies’
The children listened to the story and sequenced pictures from the story. The children re-told the story using visual prompts. We spoke about ‘Who’ is in the story, ‘Where’ is the story based, ‘How’ did the different characters feel throughout the story and corresponded the feelings to the zone of regulation.
In Maths, the children have been learning all about the number ‘zero’. The children have been understanding that zero means nothing and using the word empty. We have been understanding how to make ‘zero’ and how to write the numeral for zero. The children have also been matching numerals to amounts using cubes.
In Project, the children have been learning about ‘Superheroes’ and People who help us. We have been looking at the different qualities a superhero has. The children all made a superhero belt and described their own superhero quality. The children will be learning all about our real-life superheroes. If any parents or carers would be happy to come into school to share and discuss with the children their occupation, please speak to your child’s class teacher regarding this.

In Literacy, we have been reading the story ‘The Jolly Postman’
The children went on a special trip to the local post-box this week to post our letter to the Wicked Witch.
In Project, the children have been learning about Christianity and the story of Christmas.
Children were able to correctly sequence the Nativity story.

In Literacy, we have been reading the story ‘The Jolly Postman’
The children received a letter from the Wicked Witch this week demanding we give her the recipe for her Witches brew! The children have been writing her letters.
In Maths, the children have been recapping their learning of one more and one less.
The children were also introduced to a part-part-whole model this week, learning how to make a number sentence when using one.
In Project, the children have been learning about Judaism and the story of Hanukkah.
Over the next few weeks of their Project learning they are focusing on the topic ‘Celebrations’, in particular ‘Festivals of Light’. Children will become familiar with these three religious beliefs:

Christianity

The children have been sequencing the events of the story and thinking about key vocabulary such as:

In Maths, the children have been learning 1,2,3,4,5.
We have been practising writing number sentences using cubes, counters and colouring pencils.

In Project, the children have been learning about Hinduism and the story of Diwali.
Over the next few weeks of their Project learning they are focusing on the topic ‘Celebrations’, in particular ‘Festivals of Light’. Children will become familiar with these three religious beliefs:

Judaism
Christianity

Autumn 2, Week 4
In Phonics this week, the children learnt the phonemes SH, TH, NG, NK and have been practising reading the tricky words SHE, HE, and OF.
The children have learnt that a tricky word is a word we cannot phonetically sound out.
Next week the children will be learning about why and how we add ‘s’ to the end of words, such as:
Cats
Pots
Pegs
They will also be reviewing previous learning from their phonics lessons.

In Literacy, we have been reading the story ‘The Jolly Postman’
The children have been researching what a postman does and the key features of letters.
In Maths, the children have been learning about positional language.
They have been able to describe where an object is using key language, for example:
the bear is inside the box
the bear is under the box
In Project, the children have been learning the Nursery Rhymes ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ and ‘The Muffin Man’.
Children have each been able to attempt to thread some legs onto our spiders, as well as making their own muffins in class.

Autumn 2, Week 3
In Phonics this week, the children learnt the phonemes Z, ZZ, QU and CH and have been practising reading the tricky words GO / TO / NO / INTO.
The children have learnt that a tricky word is a word we cannot phonetically sound out.
The children went on to write these graphemes using the following sayings:
Z- across the zebra’s face, zig-zag down and along.
Q- round the queen’s face, down her robe and a flick at the end
Next week the children will be looking at the following phonemes: sh,th,ng,nk.

In Literacy, we have been reading the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’.
The children have been creating a story map independently this week, annotating it with key phrases from the text.
In Maths, the children have been learning about circles and triangles.
They have been able to create artwork using only those shapes.

Letters regarding the Christmas play have been sent out this week – this includes your child’s character, their costume and their play lines.

Autumn 2, Week 2
In Phonics this week, the children learnt the phonemes V, W, X, and Y and have been practising reading the tricky words AND / HAS / HIS / HER.
The children have learnt that a tricky word is a word we cannot phonetically sound out.
The children went on to write these graphemes using the following sayings:
V- down to the bottom of the volcano and back up to the top
W- down and up, and down and up the wave
X- from the top across the box to the bottom; from the top again, across the top to the bottom
Y- down, around the yo-yo and curl round the string
Next week the children will be looking at the following phonemes: z, qu, th, sh

In Literacy, we have been reading the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’.
The children have been creating a story map as a whole class, then independently illustrating a scene from the novel.
In Maths, the children practised finding one more and one less than a number.
The children were able to use a number line to jump forwards and backwards to find their answer.
The children will now be taking home 'library books' from their classroom.
This will be changed every Friday.
It is to read to your child at home - we are not expecting the child to read it to you.
Please ensure the book is treated carefully at home. Please keep it in your childs' bag each day, safely in their reading wallet.
Please continue to engage with Tapestry by liking/commenting on your child’s posts. If you child has done some extra work at home that they would like to share with us, please feel free to take a picture of this and share it via Tapestry too!
Next week is Anti-Bullying week, and Friday is non-uniform day for Children in Need.

Autumn 2, Week 1
Thank to everyone that was able to join us for the inter-faith session on Friday!
In Phonics, the children learnt the phonemes ss, ll, ff, and j and have been practising reading the tricky words PUT/PULL/FULL/AS. The children have learnt that two letters which make one sound are called a digraph.
The children went on to write these graphemes using the following sayings:
ss- down the snake from head to tail
ll- down the lollipop stick
ff- down the flamingo to its foot and across its wings
j- down the jellyfish and dot its head
Next week the children will be looking at the following phonemes: v,w,x,y.

In Maths, the children practised making number sentences using addition.
We used a five-frame to support our learning on this.

Autumn 1 Week 7
Thank to everyone that was able to join us for the parent lesson on Thursday.
In Phonics, the children learnt the phonemes h,b,f,l and have been practising reading the tricky word ‘the’. The children went on to write these graphemes using the following sayings:
h- down up and over the helicopter
b- down bears back, up and round its tummy
f- down the flamingo to its foot across it wings
l- down the lollipop stick

In maths, the children practised counting to 3 and practised different ways of making 3. The children enjoyed using stickers to make the numbers 1,2 and 3.
During the first week back we will celebrating Interfaith week. Adults are welcome to join us for a food tasting session on Friday 3rd November at 2:30pm. If you do send children in with a dish, please ensure all ingredients are listed and no nuts are included. Children are welcome to wear their own clothes on Friday.

Autumn 1 Week 6
Hello,
The weather is certainly beginning to feel more autumnal! The children have enjoyed exploring the puddles and being outside.
In Phonics the children learnt the phonemes e,u,r,ck and have been practising reading the tricky word ‘I’. The children went on to write these graphemes using the following sayings:
ck- For c: Curl round the heel of the sock
For k: Down the sock, up and across, back and down to the corner
e- around the elephants eye and curl down its trunk
u- down and around the umbrella and back to the ground
r- from the cloud to the ground and over the rainbow

In maths, the children explored pattern. The children used key vocabulary: same, repeating and pattern. The children gathered resources in the classroom to make their own unique patterns.
Next week, the children will be making model houses, if you have any cardboard boxes please do bring them in.

Autumn 1 Week 4
Good afternoon,
It has been a lovely week in EYFS. The children have been busy exploring all of the classrooms and have enjoyed lots of time outside as the weather has continued to stay so warm!
In Phonics the children learnt the phonemes n,m,i,d. The children went on to write these graphemes using the following sayings:
i- down the iguana and dot the leaf
n- down, up and over the net
m- down, up and over the mouses ears
d- round the ducks body, up to its head and down to its feet

In maths, the children continued to match, sort and compare this week. The children explored rules in maths and made up their own rules to help sort different objects eg they sorted the shells into two groups, spiky and not spiky.
On Tuesday, the whole school had a practise fire dill, this was to help the children understand where to go if they heard the alarm and how this procedure works if ever needed. The children were very calm and followed adults instructions really well.

Good afternoon,
It has been a very busy week in EYFS this week. The children started to learn Phonics using Little Wandles scheme. This week the children learnt the s,a,t,p phonemes and on Friday revisited, finding things that begin with these letters. Here is a link to Little Wandles parent page to find out more:

In maths, the children learnt to match, sort and compare this week. The children paired socks and then went on to find things in their environment that match. The children explored things that were similar and could explain why they weren’t exactly the same.
On Thursday, we went for a visit to the library. A copy of the user agreement has been left on our communication board. Please do take a copy if your child would like to receive a library card and borrow books.
Thank you for the family portraits we received this week, the children enjoyed sharing these with others.

Autumn Term 1 Week 2
Good afternoon,
It has been a great first full week in school. The children are getting used to their routines and have enjoyed exploring all of the classrooms and outside this week. The children took part in their first PE lesson today, we explored different types of jumps and jumping in different directions.
Our Project this half term is called ‘All About Me’, the children have been drawing family portraits and telling their peers more about each other. Please can you send your child in with a family photo by Wednesday 20th September. The children will use this photo for an art piece next week.
Next week, the children will begin their maths and phonics learning. The scheme we use to teach phonics is called Little Wandles. Autumn 1 Week 1
Good afternoon,
It has been wonderful to welcome the children into their new classes this week. We have been spending time getting to know each other and their new classrooms.
Next week, the children will be completing the Reception Baseline Assessment. In the afternoons the children will be completing their first Project of the half term called ‘All About Me’. The children will be getting to know each other and their families. Next Friday, the children will have their first PE lesson! The children will need named PE kit.
We look forward to welcoming you into our classrooms on Monday for the ‘Meet the Teacher’ talk at 3:15 and 5pm.
