Science at HCFS

At Hatfield Community Free School, science is an exciting, hands‑on journey where curiosity leads the way. We follow the Hamilton scheme of work but adapt it carefully to meet the needs, interests and abilities of our children, ensuring every learner can question, explore and make sense of the world. Practical investigations sit at the heart of our approach; children regularly predict, observe, test, measure and evaluate as they carry out real scientific enquiries that bring learning to life. From exploring forces to investigating habitats in our outdoor spaces, children are encouraged to think like scientists and ask the big questions that spark deeper understanding. Our Science curriculum is further enriched through unforgettable experiences such as our annual  Science Day, where interactive workshops, bubbling potions and explosive demonstrations ignite a passion for discovery. Through this rich blend of structured progression, hands‑on exploration and inspiring enrichment, we aim to develop confident, curious thinkers who see science not just as a subject, but as an exciting adventure into understanding our world around them.
