Year 6 Blog - Friday 26th April 2024
Good afternoon Parents & Carers,
We have had busy but great week in Year 6!
The children have been completing past papers in class to familiarise themselves with a range of different SATS style questions. We are so incredibly proud of their hard work and determination – we have seen an incredible amount of progress and are excited to see this continue over the next couple of weeks!
In English this week, we have being exploring the short film ‘Alma’. We have spent time paying close attention to the actions and micro expressions of the characters and we have learnt a range of acronyms to help us remember important features to include in our writing. The children’s writing over the past couple of weeks has been incredible! They have fully immersed themselves into the topic and have been including some really ambitious vocabulary in their work. We are now going to move on to writing a narrative based on this clip and we can’t wait to read them!
Next week, we are going to be doing our final set of checkpoints before SATS. We are going to run this week as a ‘mock SATs week’s that the children know exactly what the procedures will be. They are more than ready and all we ask is that they try their best! We are so proud of them.
This week’s homework activities is about money ratios and calculating the radius/diameter. Here are a few handy videos that children might want to watch before completing their homework sheet:

Good afternoon Parents & Carers,
We have had a busy week in Year 6 – where the children have been reviewing their checkpoints and completing lots of new learning.
The year 6 team have sent out emails this afternoon in regards to the new morning booster groups. This provision will start on the week beginning 18th March and run up until the tests themselves. We cannot stress enough the impact that the boosters are having upon the children who have been regularly attending, some children have doubled their scores in some papers! Please do encourage and support your child to attend the club every week in this final push towards the exams.
In English this week, we have continued the learning on discussions and arguments. We have been using our understanding of model verbs and adverbials to begin to piece together a balanced argument (debating whether zoos are ethical). Next week, we will continue to construct an argument and conclude by giving our own opinion on the topic. We are looking forward to seeing the children use a variety of features in their work.
In Maths, we have been learning about algebra. The children have been using formulae to identify the value of letters. They have also completed learning on the nth term and linear sequences. We have been very impressed with their resilience with this new topic. Next week, we will be revising the four rules of number and applying these to reasoning questions.
This week’s homework activities is about determiners, adding/subtracting fractions and adding/subtracting decimals. Here are a few handy videos that children might want to watch before completing their homework sheet:

Year 6 Blog - Friday 1st March 2024
Good afternoon Parents & Carers,
It’s been a lovely first week of Spring term 2. The children have come back motivated and eager to push themselves with their learning. It has been great to see their commitment and the willingness to further their understanding within lessons. This week, we have started our new English topic (arguments and discussions). We have spent a lot of time over the past few days exploring the purpose of this genre of writing and the range of SPaG feature that can be use within a text. The children have completed learning on modal verbs and relative clauses and have been able to identify ways that these can be used appropriately within a discussion text. The question that we are discussing is ‘Are Zoos Ethical’. During discussion opportunities this week, the children have raised valid points and have been able to counter these with possible arguments against these views. Over the next few weeks, the children will be gathering evidence and building up a balanced argument which debates this question.
In mathematics this week we have been exploring area – more specifically, the area of parallelograms and triangles. The children have learnt the formula (BxH=A and BxH/2=A) and have been able to apply his when answering a range of fluency questions. It has been great to see children apply their understanding of multiplication and division when answering these questions. After checkpoints, the children will be learning about a new concept – algebra.
Next week the children will be completing their spring term checkpoints. I think that we are all quite excited to see the progress that they have made since the last checkpoints in the autumn term.
This week’s homework activities follows on from our learning his week (area and adverbials). Here are a few handy videos that children might want to watch before completing their homework sheet:
How to find the area of a triangle - BBC Bitesize
How to show the area of a parallelogram is base × height - BBC Bitesize

Year 6 Blog - Friday 9th February 2024
Good afternoon Parents & Carers,
It’s been another busy week in Year 6 and the children are going from strength to strength in their learning. This week we have introduced the children to a new exercise book that we are wanting them to use in their learning - a ‘vocabulary ninja’ book, where they are able to collect and build up their understanding of new words that they come across throughout the curriculum. When explaining to children that this week is the ‘penultimate’ week of term, they added this word straight to their new books, noting down that it means second before last.
In mathematics this week we have been tackling the tricky concept of ratio and proportion. This can be a complicated concept to master in Year 6, but the children have taken their learning in their stride and applied it to the different context of more reasoning based questions.
This week’s homework activity surrounds this concepts, so here are a few handy videos that children might want to watch before completing their homework sheet:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEw1XaPH6Pg

Ratio - KS2 Maths - BBC Bitesize
In English this week, the children have been planning a chapter of Harry Potter to write themselves. Their chapter centres around a character within the book discovering the Mirror of Erised, where, when the character looks into the mirrors reflection, they see their greatest desire. We’ve got some excellent plans and ideas that have already been generated, and it will be truly wonderful to see what the children produce by the end of the half term.
Thank you to all of the parents who have invested in a CGP revision book for your child, the children were so excited to have them handed out this week and take home. We really hope that they’re a helpful resource for children to access to support their consolidation of what they’re doing in school.
Have a fabulous weekend - it’s almost half term!

Year 6 Blog - Friday 2nd February 2024
It’s been an incredibly busy week in Year 6. We are continuing to build our knowledge and understanding of our modern novel, Harry Potter. This week, the children have been putting together instructional texts on how to play the wizarding game of Quidditch. It’s resulted in some beautiful double page spreads that we’ll be uploading to our school facebook page, so do be sure to take a look!
In Mathematics this week, we have been thinking about co-ordinates in the four quadrants. The children have learnt the motto ‘walk before you fly’ to ensure that they remember to move across the x axis before moving up and down the y axis.
For homework this week, the children have all been given a task surrounding two mathematical concepts.
Firstly, there is a piece of work for children to complete on Fractions, Percentages and Decimals and how to convert from the one to another. Here’s a helpful video to support your child with this concept:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Xt4UDk7Kzw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZMj0OX5WJ8
The second homework task surrounds multistep worded problems. The will include a mixture of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division calculations that need to be carried out. I highly recommend that children use the acronym RUCSAC to help them work through the questions. Here is a video that your child may want to watch to remind themselves of this strategy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdM_mR9JAFY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgtbLMEmEEg
In addition, there are some children who are requiring a bit more practise on plotting and reading co-ordinates, so this will have been sent home with them. The following video can support with this topic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcb-mcREIi0
Today we have celebrated our termly Thrive day and it’s been wonderful to see the children embracing this day wearing colourful socks, ties and headwear! To focus our learning on this, we completed a session of children identifying the different things that make them feel dysregulated and what they can do in order to help themselves. We then created a toolbox we can use to cope with various scenarios.
A great week Year 6, Well done for your continued hard work, you are making us all very proud!

In project this week, the children have engaged in some exciting activities, including making their own papyrus, which is what the ancient Egyptians wrote on, and learning about famous Pharaohs, Gods and Goddesses. It is such an engaging theme and it is clear to see that children have been so inspired by the topic!
Year 6 Blog - Friday 12th January 2024
What a jam-packed first full week back we’ve had of the Spring term. The children have returned in such a settled manner in to their routines and lessons, so are showing real readiness for the work that needs to be put in between now and the SATs assessments in the Summer. Firstly, Miss Cooper and I are absolutely overwhelmed with the response to homework that we’ve had this week. The almost every single child in Year 6 had completed their homework and had it ready to hand in on Wednesday morning - let’s keep up the good work!
In English this week we have begun work on our new genre, fantasy stories and we are looking at the incredibly first novel in the Harry Potter series: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The children have read through chapters one and two and taken part in a series of activities linked to the book. We look forward to seeing this work develop over the next half term.
In mathematics our work has been two-fold. We spent Monday and Tuesday recapping the order of operations. The children were taught that whilst following the steps of BODMAS, it is important to know that the operations of division and multiplication, and those of addition and subtraction have equal importance and when children are left with calculations with both operations needing to be completed, the children should work through the problem from left to right.
For homework this week, the children have been given a poetry based reading comprehension and some work on dividing and multiplying fractions. The following videos should support children with these activities if they’ve forgotten the methods to use.
Dividing fractions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAKwouL-lTc
Multiplying fractions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSuimdP6WtE
We highly recommend that the children watch both videos above to support them in achieving their homework independently. In addition to the homework activities for this week, if we found that your child still needed to work on the BODMAS and division work that was set last week, we’ve provided additional practice for these concepts. Please remember that the homework is to support the learning that we are doing in class in preparing the children for their SATs.
By now, you will have received an invite to SATs booster clubs if your child has been identified. Please ensure that you sign your child up if you are able to - we are so lucky to be able to run 10 different booster sessions throughout the week, supported by lots of members of the HCFS team and know that it will be a useful resource to children.
Have a great weekend.

Next week, we will further this understanding by continuing to learn about the four rules of number.
In Science this week, we learned about what makes a healthy body. We explored the importance of diet and exercise. We looked at some food diaries and discussed the positive points and possible suggestions for a healthier diet. For the second half of the lesson we learnt about drugs and alcohol. We discussed the facts and myths associated with these.
Next week, we will be learning about blood and the heart.
In project, we have been learning about the importance of 28th June 1914. We conducted research to find out what happened on this day and what effects this had on the rest of the world. We also explored the transport and weapons that were used during WW1. Next week, we will be exploring the roles of men and women in WW1 and how these differed.
Next week, Golden Eagles will be going swimming. Please ensure that they bring their swimming kit in with them each day.
We hope that you have a lovely weekend!

Year 6 blog - 22nd September
We have had a great week in Year 6.
In English, we started our new topic ‘Wonder’. We have loved reading the book and are looking forward to finding out what happens next in the story. Our focus this week has been about diary entries. We started the week by exploring the features of a diary and as the week has progressed, we have moved towards writing our own diary entry from the perspective of a character in the book. Next week, we will be looking at writing our own chapter of the story.
In Maths, we have been learning about decimals. We began the week recapping our knowledge of place value and decimal numbers. We then moved on to multiplying and dividing these decimals. We are so proud of the children and their determination with this topic – they have mastered the skill of using a place value chart. Next week, we will be learning about addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
In Science this week, we learned about adulthood and old age. We explored what happens to people as they transition into old age and we compared the facts to the stereotypes. We then drew a timeline which represented the human life cycle. Next week, we will looking at what constitutes a healthy lifestyle.
In project, we have been looking at the key people/leaders who were involved in WW1.
During our double lesson, we looked at the countries who were allies, the central powers and the neutral countries. We then conducted some research into the key people involved in the war. To end our project learning this week, we imagined we were someone who lived through the war and we wrote a diary entry from their perspective. Next week, we will be looking at what happened on 28th June 1914 and the weapons that were used during WW1.
We hope that you have a wonderful weekend!

Year 6 blog - 15th September
We have had a busy week in Year 6. The children have been completing there baseline assessments and should all be very of their hard work.
In our remaining English and Maths lessons we have been making our own revision guides. The children will be adding to these as the year progresses. Next week, we will begin our new English topic ‘Wonder’. We are all really looking forward to getting stuck into the book and writing some creative pieces of work. In Maths next week, we are going to be exploring fractions and decimals.
In Science this week, we looked at adolescence and puberty. The children approached this topic with maturity and were able to participate in good discussions. They were able to identify the changes that happen to males and females during puberty. Next week, we will be exploring the changes that happen to adults as the move into old age.
We continued our Fallen Fields project learning this week. The children explored a range of primary and secondary sources and were able to identify the differences between the two. We also looked at propaganda and how this was used in WW1. The children designed their very own propaganda poster. Next week we will be researching which countries were allies and which were central powers. We will also explore the key people from WW1 and what their roles were.
We hope that you have a lovely weekend! Year 6 J
Year 6 blog - 8th September
We have had a fantastic first week back as Year 6 pupils!
The children have settled well into their new routines and are excited for all of the opportunities that are available to Year 6 pupils.
In English we have been focussing on our creative writing. We have been exploring the use of metaphors, similes, personification and synonyms and what effect these can have on the reader. The children were given picture stimuli and had to write creative sentences, which included a range of features. We have been very impressed by the work that has been produced.
In Maths we are learning about place value and negative numbers. We started the week by recapping the importance of place value and used this understanding to help us order and compare a range of numbers. When we moved onto negative numbers, we explored the use of different mathematical symbols. Next week, the children will be sitting their Year 6 baseline assessments.
Our Science topic this half term is ‘The Human Body’. We started the topic by exploring the stages of human development. We also used a table to compare the gestation periods of different animals and the correlation this had to their litter size. We displayed our findings using a scatter graph. Next week, we will be learning adolescence and puberty.
Our project topic for this term is ‘Fallen Fields’. We introduced this unit of work by making poppies out of filter paper and paint. We are looking forward to finishing these next week.
